Unwrapped ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our WhatsApp chat analysis service at unwrapped.chat.

Unwrapped is a free tool that transforms your WhatsApp chat exports into beautiful, shareable "Wrapped" experiences. We take your privacy seriously and have designed our service with data protection in mind.

Information We Collect

1. Chat Data You Upload

When you upload a WhatsApp chat export file (.txt or .zip), we process:

  • Message timestamps and dates
  • Sender names as they appear in your chat
  • Message content (for analysis purposes only)
  • Emojis, links, and media indicators

2. Generated Statistics (Stored)

We permanently store the following aggregated data in your Wrap:

  • Message counts and activity statistics
  • Member names and their participation metrics
  • Top emojis and link domains (not full URLs)
  • Activity patterns (hourly/daily distributions)
  • AI-generated insights about chat themes and personality
  • Short quote snippets (up to ~50 characters) selected by AI to represent discussion topics
  • Frequently repeated words and phrases from your chat

3. Technical Data

We automatically collect:

  • IP address (for rate limiting - 10 wraps per day)
  • Basic usage analytics (page views, feature usage)
  • Browser type and device information

What We DO NOT Store

  • Full message content - Your complete chat messages are not stored. Only short snippets (quotes up to ~50 characters and repeated phrases) are kept as part of your Wrap's insights
  • Your uploaded file - The original .txt or .zip file is processed in memory and then discarded
  • Personal contact information - No phone numbers, emails, or profile pictures
  • User accounts - We don't require registration or collect account details

How We Use Your Information

  • Generate your Wrap: Compute statistics, create visualizations, and generate AI insights
  • Create shareable URL: Store aggregated statistics so you and others can view your Wrap anytime
  • Rate limiting: Use IP addresses to prevent abuse (10 wraps per IP per day)
  • Service improvement: Analyze anonymous usage patterns to improve the product

Third-Party Services

OpenAI (AI Analysis)

To generate AI-powered insights about your chat, we send a sample of up to 100 messages to OpenAI's API (gpt-4.1-mini). This includes:

  • Sender names from those sampled messages
  • Message content (truncated to 200 characters per message)
  • Basic chat statistics (message count, date range)

OpenAI processes this data according to their Privacy Policy. Per OpenAI's API data usage policy, data sent via API is not used to train their models.

Vercel (Hosting & Infrastructure)

Our service is hosted on Vercel, which may collect standard web server logs including IP addresses and request metadata. See Vercel's Privacy Policy.

Data Retention

  • Uploaded files: Processed immediately and not retained
  • Generated Wraps: Stored indefinitely so your shareable URL continues to work
  • IP addresses: Used for rate limiting, may be retained in server logs

Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction (including GDPR, CCPA), you may have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about your Wrap
  • Request deletion of your Wrap
  • Opt out of analytics tracking
  • Request information about how your data is processed

Data Security

We implement appropriate security measures including:

  • HTTPS encryption for all data transmission
  • Secure cloud infrastructure (Vercel)
  • Database encryption at rest
  • No storage of raw message content

Children's Privacy

Unwrapped is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please contact us for removal.

Changes to This Policy
